Environmental Tectonics
v2.0 : A Call for Projects Competition
.
Competition Aspirations The words ‘architecture’, ‘environment’, ‘ecology’ and ‘sustainability’ are indexes to open concepts. It is the belief of the organizing committee that it is an imperative of our time to critically reassess and continually rede?ne these concepts. The future of architecture and the built environment is to be informed by this changing discourse which we hope to glimpse within yet undiscovered experiments and projects. The strength behind current explorations within the fields of ecology and sustainability is often due to cross-disciplinary collaborations and exchanges of knowledge between diverse fields of research. The competition is therefore open to all architects, designers, students, engineers, scientists and other related professions that express interest in the future of the relationship between the natural and built environments. Projects will be evaluated on their ability to address the larger contextual issues of environments, ecology and sustainability and, most importantly, on their potential to develop new design methodologies in relation to these parameters. We hope to reward projects that integrate theory and technique, tectonics and materials, policy and context. The organizers invite all ideas, projects and/or built works from 2003
to the present. Projects of all scales and types are open for submission
and will be grouped by related themes at the discretion of the technical
jury prior to final judging.
.
The Architectural Association The Architectural Association is, in its constitutional structure, ?rst and foremost an association of members, originally established by students in 1847. Currently there are approximately 3,200 members of the AA internationally, including some of the world’s leading architects, who play a vital role in shaping the identity and assisting in the development of the School. Registered students and staff of the AA automatically become members, and membership is open to anyone with an interest in architecture. Members participate in lectures and events, visit exhibitions and make use of the AA’s facilities. Environments, Ecologies & Sustainability ClusterIn 2005 the Architectural Association launched a series of clusters to connect the work of different members, programmes and events and to reach beyond the boundaries of the association. There have been four clusters established de?ne these extended associations of which one is the Environments, Ecologies & Sustainability Cluster. The Environments, Ecology and Sustainability Cluster has chosen to
launce this competition to collate and reveal currently undisclosed
EES design ideas larger audiences. The competitions and exhibitions
will form part of a discussion forum, led by members of the competition
jury, which will debate emerging trends within the growing field of
EES design-research.
.
Submission Requirements The competition sponsors again expect a diverse range of ideas and project types to be submitted. Projects of all scales and types are open for submission and will be grouped by related themes at the discretion of the technical jury prior to final judging. Because of this diversity the submission requirements ask for a minimum/ or maximum number of submitted panels rather than a fixed number. This flexibility will ensure that each participant is able to sufficiently communicate their ideas to the judges. These panels will serve as the bases for judging. No other formats will be allowed and no digital information submitted will be viewed during judging. The panels should be either 2 or 4 vertical A2's (42cm x 59.4cm), mounted on a 5mm rigid lightweight board. In addition the submission must include a CD containing, a 300dpi of each panel, the text documents included on each panel and higher resolution images included for each submission. The submission must also include the offical completed competiton Registration Form found hunder Dowladable Brief & Poster. More specific information can be found under Downloads, Brief & Poster in the downloadable brief.
